Matriarch from the Echo Valley Pack Killed.

In a Great Lakes Indian Fish & Wildlife Commission press release, January 29, 2024, Ma’iingan Killed Near Red Cliff Indian Reservation, stated they are aware of the killing of a single female Ma’iingan (wolf) from the Echo Valley Pack near the Red Cliff Ojibwe Reservation. Ma’iinganag is protected under the Endangered Species Act to help reestablish their original range in the Great Lakes Region. To the Anishinaabe people, Ma’iinganag are teachers and relatives. GLIFWC laments the loss of this important family matriarch.

While the investigation of this incident is ongoing, as it involves a non-tribal member, GLIFWC supports a full inquiry into this matter by the US Fish & Wildlife Service, Red Cliff Band, and other appropriate law enforcement authorities.

I became aware of her pack in 2017. Red Cliff Ojibwe Reservation biologists have been monitoring her pack for a long time. The loss of this important matriarch is heartwrenching.

The following video is from trail cameras set up by Red Cliff biologists. The Echo Valley Wolf Pack video was published on February 21, 2017. It is 45 minutes long and shows multiple members of her pack over four hours. I recommend watching the full video to view the interactions and the vocals from her Pack and Ravens. The video is 45 minutes in length.

More on the story to come.

We are all diminished by the ignorance and cruelty of someone who takes the life of a wolf, of any wild animal just going about their business trying to live their own lives, to which they have every right to pursue. This should be considered an act of Ecocide and in a just world would be prosecuted as such. In a just world, with better education and more concern, we’d likely have less uninformed and armed people stealing the life of a wolf.

This is so sad. I can’t imagine how disgusting this person is who could kill this beautiful animal. I pray for justice.
