The wolf quota has been reduced to 119, with tribes portion at 81 and they will not hunt their brother ma’iingan
The following is from Peter David, wildlife biologist with the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission (GLIFWC).
“As this season has unfolded, many people have asked how they can support the tribes’ treaty rights and their desire to protect ma’iingan.”
I think one very tanglible thing is to applaud the DNR for reducing the quota in recognition of the tribes’ off-reservation treaty rights. You may not acually hear GLIFWC applaud them for this; it is afterall, what we expect them to do. But at the same time, DNR will take a lot of heat for doing this from certain quarters, and it is not a given that it will unfold the same way come fall. So I do suggest you let them know it’s appreciated; I think the more people and organizations that do, the better. Thank you all for your efforts!
